According to Ayurveda, India’s traditional system of medicine, it is a good idea to create some space once or twice each year to eat a simple diet and do some detoxifying lifestyle practices (such as tongue scraping, meal spacing and oil massage) in order to give the digestive system a chance to clean itself out a bit. Your body knows exactly what to do. We just need to give it space and time to work its magic.

The focus of this cleanse is NOT on losing weight or forcing yourself to conform to a rigid, restrictive diet or lifestyle. You will still be able to work and tend to your responsibilities at home while participating in the cleanse—just no eating out or partying. Ahhh, autumn. The days are getting shorter, the heat and humidity of summer have finally dissipated and life has begun to settle into a new rhythm. This is the perfect time to come back into balance and cultivate some new, healthier habits. 

According to the healing science of Ayurveda, the body is especially vulnerable during times of seasonal transition. In spring and fall, the junction points between the hot and cold seasons, the body must not only adapt to changes in weather and diet but also dispel any excess qualities that many have accumulated during the previous season.

During the summer, excessive heat may accumulate in the body. Too much heat may manifest as imbalances such as inflammation, skin issues, loose stools, heartburn, migraines, irritability/anger and/or indigestion. Even if one lives in a humid climate, the cumulative effect of all of this heat can start to dry out the body. By early fall, we may start to notice dry skin/eyes/hair, constipation due to dry stools, dry cough and/or irritation of the sinuses and mucus membranes. It is especially important to take action to manage dryness before moving deeper into the fall/winter season, when dry, cold, light, rough and mobile qualities will really start to increase.

In addition, summer (like the holiday season in winter) is often a time when we step outside of our normal routines. We may find that our lives become quite busy in the summertime, as we try to pack a lot into the long days. Vacations, social events and travel may lead to irregularity and excess in our diet and lifestyle. Furthermore, many of the classic summer treats, such as hamburgers and hot dogs, fried food, beer, margaritas, BBQ chicken, pickles and potato chips only serve to increase the accumulation of hot and dry qualities in the body. As a result, our digestion and energy levels can really take hit in summer. It is only natural that we might find ourselves craving a reset as we transition to autumn.
